An International Protea Register is held in South Africa. The register provides for registration of cultivar names of genera of African proteaceae, i.e. Aulax, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Mimetes, Orothamnus, Paranomus, Protea, and Serruria.
The collective name "proteas" is used when generally referring to the above mentioned genera. The aim is to avoid duplicated names within the Industry worldwide. This group, consisting mainly of researchers and botanists, agreed that their work would encompass both African and Australian genera of Proteaceae.
The IPWG Symposium is held every 4 years, normally in conjunction with the IPA Conference, and alternate with an IPWG Workshop. Paper presented at IPWG Symposia and Workshops are published in an Acta Horticulturae.
